Independent Study Projects offer students the opportunity to integrate what they have learned in their formal course work by approaching a topic in depth with the assistance of a team of mentors. It allows the student to practice self-directed learning while demonstrating their ability to work with colleagues/supervisors; skills essential to the lifelong education required by professionals in healthcare or a related field.

Program graduate Pedro Flores (spring 2013), owner of Therapy Professionals, titled his ISP “Situational Leadership II: A Prescription for Leadership Success among Healthcare Workers.” With the support of Dr. Drea Zigarmi; a highly respected and experienced management consultant, best-selling author, powerful trainer and motivational speaker, and founding Associate of the Blanchard Companies, Pedro designed and analyzed his ISP.

The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect Situational Leadership II Training had on several measures for leadership success among healthcare managers: leadership behavior frequency, leader-member relationships, employee satisfaction, employee affect, and employee work intentions. This study demonstrated that healthcare managers who underwent didactic training in Situational Leadership II were able to improve their direct reports’ positive affect, intent to perform, intent to be an organizational citizen, and intent to stay with the organization. These outcomes are congruent with the demands being placed on today’s healthcare managers.
